Automatically removing silences in your videos with Tella

Most videos you record may contain moments of silence—whether at the start when you’re gathering your thoughts or in the middle when you’ve lost your train of thought. Manually removing these silences can be time-consuming. Tella’s Silence Removal tool automates this process, saving you time and effort.
When your recording includes audio from multiple sources — for example, your microphone and your screen — Tella analyzes all non-muted audio tracks together. A section is only marked as silent when every audible track is silent at the same time, so you won’t accidentally cut moments where audio is playing on one source but not another. Layers you’ve muted (volume set to zero) are automatically excluded from this analysis.

Accessing the silence removal tool

  1. Open your video in the Tella editor.
  2. Click on the Trim button to open the trim sidebar.
  3. In the trim sidebar, locate the Silence Removal tool.

Choosing a silence removal mode

Tella offers different modes to control how aggressively silences are removed:
  • Natural: Removes larger silences, preserving a more conversational flow.
  • Fast: Removes smaller silences for a more concise video.
  • Faster: Removes very short silences, creating the most condensed version of your video.

How to select a mode

  1. In the Silence Removal section, choose your preferred mode (Natural, Fast, or Faster).
  2. Tella will analyze your video based on the selected mode and display:
    1. The number of silences detected.
    2. The total time that will be saved by removing these silences.

How silence detection works with multiple audio sources

If your recording includes more than one audio source — for example, your microphone and your screen recording’s audio — Tella analyzes all audio tracks when detecting silences. A region is only marked as silence when every audible audio source is quiet at the same time. This means that if you are silent but your screen share is playing audio (such as a demo, a video, or music), that section will not be flagged as a silence. You do not need to do anything extra to enable this — Tella handles it automatically.

Muted layers are excluded

If you’ve muted a layer by setting its volume to zero, that layer is automatically excluded from silence detection. This is useful when your recording includes a screen capture with system audio that you don’t plan to keep — muting that layer ensures silence detection focuses only on the tracks you care about, like your voice. For example, if you recorded your screen with system audio alongside a microphone track, and you mute the screen layer, Tella will detect silences based on your microphone audio alone rather than requiring both tracks to be silent. The timeline also displays waveforms for all audio sources in your recording. Your microphone audio appears in the primary color, while other audio sources (like screen recording audio) appear in a muted gray. This gives you a clear visual overview of where audio activity is happening across all layers.

Applying silence removal

  1. After selecting a mode, click on the Remove button.
  2. Tella will automatically remove the detected silences from your video.
  3. The timeline will update to reflect the changes, showing where silences were removed.

Fine-tuning your edits

If you wish to adjust the automatic edits:
  1. Navigate to the specific area on the timeline where a silence was removed.
  2. Click and drag the handles of the split created by Tella to adjust where the silence removal begins and ends.
  3. Play back the video to ensure the edit meets your expectations.

Resetting silence removal

If you’re not satisfied with the results:
  1. Click on the Reset Trims button in the trim sidebar.
  2. This will revert your video back to its original state, undoing all silence removal edits.
  3. You can then select a different mode or manually edit the silences.
