To record an iPhone or iPad demo, connect your iPhone to your Mac with a cable, open the screen menu in the Tella Mac app and pick your iPhone. Tella records the phone’s screen like any other screen, with your camera and microphone. It works with iPads too.
Wireless screen mirroring (AirPlay from your iPhone to your Mac) doesn’t work for recording on recent versions of macOS. The mirrored iPhone content shows up as a black rectangle in any screen recording. Apple blocks it at the system level, in every recording app, even though it looks fine on your Mac’s screen while you record. Use a cable instead.

Record your iPhone screen with the Tella Mac app

You need the Tella Mac app, your iPhone or iPad, and a cable to connect it to your Mac.
  1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac with a cable and unlock it
  2. In the Tella Mac app, click the screen button and choose your iPhone under Displays. If it isn’t listed, click Add iPhone
  3. Follow the steps Tella shows: the first time, tap Trust on your iPhone, then disconnect and reconnect the cable when asked
  4. When Tella shows iPhone video available, click OK
  5. Record as usual. Your camera and microphone record alongside the phone’s screen
If you don’t see Add iPhone, update the Tella Mac app to the latest version. To go back to recording your Mac, open the screen button again and pick a display or window.

My iPhone isn’t showing up in Tella

  • Use a cable: Tella can’t record an iPhone over Wi-Fi or AirPlay
  • Unlock your iPhone. Tella asks you to Unlock your iPhone when it’s connected but locked
  • If your iPhone asks whether to trust this computer, tap Trust and enter your passcode
  • Disconnect and reconnect the cable, then open the screen button again

Record an iPhone or iPad demo without the Mac app

If you don’t use the Mac app, connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac with a cable and show its screen in QuickTime Player:
  1. Open QuickTime Player on your Mac and choose File → New Movie Recording
  2. Click the arrow next to the record button and select your iPhone or iPad as the camera
  3. Record the QuickTime window with the Tella web app or Chrome extension
Or record on the device and upload:
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, add Screen Recording to Control Center (Settings → Control Center)
  2. Open Control Center and tap the record button to capture the screen
  3. When you’re done, stop the recording. It’s saved to your Photos
  4. Transfer the video to your computer (AirDrop is quickest) and upload it to Tella

Edit your iPhone or iPad demo

After recording, use Tella’s editor to trim the beginning and end, pick a layout that fits the device’s screen, and crop a QuickTime window recording down to just the device. To write or draw on your iPad and show only your handwriting next to you, see Draw on your iPad in a screen recording.
