Editing videos using the transcript in Tella

Most videos recorded in Tella come with an automatically generated transcript, always visible in a persistent sidebar on the right side of the editor.

Accessing the transcript

The transcript is always visible in the persistent transcript sidebar on the right side of the editor. You can click any word to jump to that point in the video, or select text to cut, keep, or copy sections — all without switching panels. If you want to access transcript editing through the trim tool instead, click Trim in the toolbar, scroll to the bottom, and click Transcript > Edit. Note: The transcript works clip by clip. If you switch to a different clip, the transcript updates accordingly. Click on any word in the transcript sidebar to jump to that point in the video. This lets you quickly preview and locate specific parts without scrubbing through the timeline.

Removing unwanted words or sections

Removing words or phrases

  1. Select the word, phrase, or sentence you wish to remove.
  2. Press the Backspace or Delete key on your keyboard, or click the Delete button in the editor.
  3. The selected text will be removed from the transcript and the corresponding section will be cut from the video timeline.

Keeping only specific parts

If you want to keep a specific section and remove everything else:
  1. Select the desired text.
  2. Click on Keep Only This.
  3. All other parts of the transcript (and video) will be removed, leaving only the selected section.
Tip: This is useful when the majority of the video is unnecessary, and you want to focus on a particular segment.

Copying a selection to a new clip

You can create a new clip from a selected portion of the transcript:
  1. Select the words you want to extract.
  2. Click Copy to new clip in the toolbar that appears.
  3. A new clip containing only the selected section is added to your timeline.
This is useful when you want to isolate a specific part of a clip for reordering or applying different edits. You can undo this action with Cmd + Z (Mac) or Ctrl + Z (Windows).

Copying a selection to a new video

To create an entirely new video from a selected portion of the transcript:
  1. Select the words you want to extract.
  2. Click Copy to new video in the toolbar that appears.
  3. A new video is created with the selected section, and it opens in a new tab.

Undoing and redoing edits

You can undo and redo most transcript editing actions, including cuts, deletions, and copying to a new clip:
  • Undo: Press Cmd + Z (Mac) or Ctrl + Z (Windows), or click the undo button in the editor toolbar.
  • Redo: Press Cmd + Shift + Z (Mac) or Ctrl + Y (Windows), or click the redo button in the editor toolbar.

Managing deleted content

Hide deleted text:

  • Toggle the Hide Deleted option to remove deleted text from the transcript view.
  • This helps you focus on the remaining content that you may still want to edit.

Fine-tuning edits in the timeline

  • After making initial edits in the transcript, you can switch to the Timeline for more precise adjustments.
  • Zoom in: Use the zoom controls to get a closer view of your edits.
  • Adjust segments: Click and drag the edges of segments on the timeline to fine-tune the start and end points down to the split second.

Editing the transcript text

Important: You cannot change the actual words in the transcript editor; you can only remove them.

To edit subtitles:

  1. Switch to the Subtitle mode.
  2. Click on Edit.
  3. You’ll see an editable version of all the text subtitles in your video, along with timestamps.
  4. Here, you can correct any transcription errors or modify the text that appears on screen.

Resetting edits

If you’ve made changes you’re not satisfied with and wish to revert to the original video:
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the transcript editor.
  2. Click on Reset Trims.
  3. This will restore your clip to its original form.

Additional tips

  • Clip-by-clip editing: The transcript works on individual clips. Be sure to switch between clips to edit their respective transcripts.
  • Efficient workflow: Using the transcript for editing can significantly speed up your workflow, as it allows you to identify and remove unwanted parts without scrubbing through the entire video.
  • Combining editing methods: You can combine transcript editing with traditional timeline editing for greater control over your video’s final outcome.
