How to Install Atelier on a Server 💻

Installing Atelier is a little bit unusual because you install it on your own server instead of on your own laptop or working machine.

you can get, a server from one of the cloud providers or you can use a Linux machine that you still have laying in the closet.

I just got one from, Hetzner over here.

So let me show you how I install Atelier.

I ssh into this new machine.

yes, and then I copy the one line install script here and it's going to tell me that I haven't installed tailscale yet and offered to do that for me.

I'm going to say yes.

Tailscale is unfortunately a, requirement for the install means, that you also need to install tailscale on your normal laptop.

The reason we have it is that it makes it very easy to make sure that only you can access your Atelier and not someone else.

If the authentication gods are on my site today, it looks like they are, And the installer will go, it's gonna need to pull, some docker images, do some boring things.

This can sometimes be a little bit slow.

so I, won't bore you with that.

And the docker pool completed and the installer finished.

It prints the URL here that you go to.

So let's open that up and the first thing Atelier wants, is to get your GitHub token so that it can clone the repos for you.

And the next step is connecting your inference provider so you can bring your OpenAI subscription or your anthropic API key or any other provider.

I'm going to do OpenAI for now.

So I'm going to hit sign in and then I go through this flow where I copy this code into the clipboard.

I have to authenticate at OpenAI, Put in the code, and then we are in business and we are in our atelier.

the first thing we'll do is make a new project.

let's say I'm just going to use that curiosity project again.

This autocompletes against your credentials.

so we're going to take this one and then I'm going to make a project here.

We're going to say, I don't know, like play the fighter game again.

And the first time you're going to run a new project on Atelier, it needs a little bit of work.

it's going to build the Docker image for this project because this project actually has a custom Docker image that is install some system dependencies that this game engine project has.

And once that has finished, once the next workspaces are going to be fast.

we can also use this button over here that is to turn this website because Atelier is a web application, but we can turn it into a progressive web application.

Basically means that it just pretends to be an actual Mac app or pretends to be actual Windows app.

And that is super nice.

That works on desktop and on mobile.

And it just makes you feel like it's you know, it's a normal app.

I'm not going to do that now because it's going to mess up my existing installation.

But I very much recommend using that option.

And that is basically it.

usually what I do when I get like a fresh new SO server like that, I would ask agents to help me completely lock it down from the rest of the Internet.

It's already pretty safe because you're on the tail net, but better safe than sorry.

And then you're basically ready to go.
