Luma skips onboarding completely and gets away with it

This time we're going to take a quick look at Luma.

So I've seen this one doing the rounds, but I've never actually tried the product out so I figured I'd take it for a spin, review the ux, take a look up the sign up onboarding if there is any, and then essentially just create our first event.

I'll share my thoughts with you on what I think is working, what's not working, what can be improved, and then you'll be able to apply this to your own product.

All right, so let's dive in then.

First things first.

I'm going to hit create your first event here.

Okay, so we got a sign in or sign up page here.

it's interesting that they've combined the two here.

So if you haven't got an account, it looks like you can continue with your email.

If you have got an account then we can either use or we can sign in with passkey or we can use Google.

I do feel like you've got to be really careful here because I think the terminology could just be a little bit clearer.

you could probably just simplify this with continue with Google or continue with passkey here.

And then I do think it's interesting that they've got use phone number as an alternative to an email.

so if I previously create my account with my phone number then I've got this additional click here, which swaps out the form field should I need to continue with my phone.

which is simple enough, But I do think it just creates a little bit of unnecessary friction here.

And the last thing we want to do right now as we're signing up or signing in is kind of just get confused by that process.

So I'm going to click sign in with Google just to make things a little bit quicker.

Okay, so I've gone through that process that's pretty standard.

Now it's asking me to create a passkey.

so it tells me passkeys are fast and a secure way to sign into my account.

So it talks about signing in without a password or a code.

It's encrypted by your device.

Works across all different devices as well.

Which which I guess if you're creating or updating events, that'll make things a lot easier.

it also says here that your existing password will still work.

You can update your sign in methods at any time.

So, I'm not entirely sold on this approach.

I think if you're signing up or you're signing in with Your social account, that's really quick and easy to do.

Whereas I think right now prompting users to create a passkey before they've had an opportunity to get in there and maybe create their first event maybe feels a little bit premature.

I'm not sure it's worth the additional friction.

So I'm just going to click Not now.

Okay, so the models disappeared and what we had in the background is now in the foreground here.

So it looks like there's no guidance or hand holding as we go through this process, which I think given the nature of the product, they can probably get away with.

So the Create Event screen is really simple here.

All right, so we'll just take a little bit of time to go through this now.

Now it looks like we have a theme applied by default here.

not quite sure how they've come up with this one.

maybe it's just a bit random.

So we got the thumbnail over here on the left and then it looks like there's a theme picker as well.

Okay, so it looks like we've got a number of different themes to choose from here which is nice.

So they're all pre made makes it much easier for users to pick something that maybe matches their brand.

Some of them as you can see are animated as well.

And then once we found one we like, there's additional options below that so we can change the color.

there's a couple of presets here.

And then we can also presumably pick our own as well, beyond that we've got style.

Not, sure what that is.

That one appears to be disabled.

And then we got font options as well, so All right, so that's all very slick.

looks like we've got an option over here as well to just hit the randomizer.

Great.

If you're maybe not quite sure what you want or maybe don't have the time to go through all of the different design options here, the other thing that does spring to mind is I wondered whether maybe they could, ask users, to share their website as they went through the onboarding.

And then that way we might be able to pull through a relevant theme by the time we hit this screen.

something maybe we could pull through fonts or at least match something similar to the font we use on the website.

color scheme, possibly even some graphics that we can use in the background as well.

So I think using that would help speed up this process.

Just help users create events much quicker without having the need to manually create themes and then start editing them.

Actually.

The more I play with this, the more I think it comes up with some interesting looking themes, to be honest.

Anyway, so it looks like this is going to be connected to our personal calendar.

now by default this looks like it's going to be a public event, which obviously makes sense.

but we do have the option to select private if we need to.

I think that's probably a sensible choice as I'd assume most users will be creating, public event.

Okay, so let's add the event name.

Now then, presumably that's just a case of clicking in there and typing what we need.

Okay, so then we got the start time and we've got the end time.

These aren't like traditional forms for selecting time and dates, but they are simple enough to get your head around.

You So we can click in here and we can change the date and then we can obviously change the time as, well now and if we need to, we can also use our keyboard as well.

which might just make things a little bit easier than scrolling through all of these different time options.

And then we've got the time zone as well here.

So we've got plus one, London time, which I think is really important to get right.

Obviously The last thing we want to be doing is creating an event for an irrelevant time.

Now if you do need to change the time, you can obviously do that up here.

There is a long list of options here, but thankfully, there is a search in here, so we can use that if we need to.

Okay, so next up we're going to add an event location.

So this gives us option to add an offline location or obviously just a virtual link with something like, Google or Zoom.

Those options are simple enough to select, but it looks like, we can also add A location just by typing in here as well.

So if there was a specific location we could type it in here.

Let's go for Newcastle, International Airport, because why not?

Okay, so it looks like it's pulling through the maps from Google.

I always think it feels more reassuring And then if we need to we can add further instructions.

so maybe this is a tricky place to find or there's a specific entrance that people need to use.

Then we can always add those there And it looks like we can also add a description here as well.

Then if you don't want to add something manual and then if we don't want to add an event description manually, what we can do is have AI suggest one for us.

So let's click on this then.

So this is going to help us generate a description for the event with AI.

it's picked out this emoji and then we'll go with a small length.

and then let's just tell it what this is then.

Done.

UX party, let's hit generate.

that looks like we're done now.

does tell us that it's still generating which is a bit weird.

but it's given us a fairly good description here.

So let's click accept.

Almost there now.

So we've got a couple of event options down here.

So we've got ticket price, so free by default.

If you want to change that and want to start accepting some payments we can.

But we obviously need to connect our stripe account to do that.

So it looks like stripe might be the only option here.

which could be a little bit limiting for some users.

Anyway, we'll click out of this one and then we've got require approval.

so I'm guessing those who apply to come to the event will need approval by the person setting on the event up obviously.

And then last option here is capacity.

So unlimited by default.

But if we do want to limit the capacity we can based on a certain number of participants.

And then we've got a clever little option here where we've got all the capacity wait list as well.

So if you've got a lot of interest in the event, then we can add those guys to the wait list which I think is a really cool feature.

All right, let's not limit this.

I think we're all done.

Let's click Create Event then.

Alright then.

So it looks like we're done.

taken straight to the overview page for the event itself and then I can double check any of these details if I need to.

yeah, I think it looks good.

I think there's a few places here and there that could do with a little bit of work, but generally speaking the UX is pretty good on this one.
