Introducing the Tella API 🚀

Hey, what's going on, everyone?

So, Tella has just released their API, and let me tell you, this has been one of the features that I've been waiting on for such a long time, and I've had a chance to play around with it for the last few days.

And let me tell you, it's not going to disappoint.

So in this video, I'm going to give you a quick little primer about the Tella API and how you can use it to really streamline and automate your video production, distribution, and repurposing workflows.

Now, just as a quick little Primer, what are APIs and how can you use them?

Now, if you use Tella, you'll know that the actual process of, video making doesn't end when it's in Tella.

After it's done in Tella, you typically have to do things like, get the embed URL, put it in an email.

Sometimes you might want to turn it into a YouTube video.

So you might want to get access to your chapters and maybe even the transcript so that you can create a YouTube description.

And there are tons of additional use cases for it.

But at the moment what you actually have to do is you have to come in here, you have to manually copy and paste things over, throw it into ChatGPT, you will need to get your embed URL and all that stuff really does start to add up over time.

But with the API, what you can do is you can use automation tools like make.com or Zapier to actually automate that part of the process.

And that is where this gets super fun.

Now I want to show you two use cases that help me quite a bit.

Now the first one is actually organizing all of my video content in Tella.

Now one of the big challenges that I've had is that I've simply made a lot of videos.

I've got 1166 videos.

To be honest, I don't know what videos I need, which ones I don't need, I don't know which ones people are watching.

And also I've got a ton of playlists that are not very organized.

Now if I wanted to do this in color, I'd have to go through every video and manually add them to a playlist so that it's somewhat organized.

But that of course is pretty time consuming with over a thousand videos.

So what I did was I set up a database in ear table that first of all allows me to import all of my Tella videos.

So you can see here I've got all of my videos, including the one that I'm making right now.

And by using the API, I actually get access to all of the information that sits inside of Tella, for example, the thumbnail that has been used on the video, the embed URL, the chapters that are generated.

Then I also have my transcript.

And with this information, what I can do is I can now set up a workflow that allows me to automatically organize all of my videos into playlists.

Now the way it works is I also imported all of my playlists, but in short, a workflow starts that reads the title, it reads the transcript, and it reads the chapters.

And based on that, it will look at my Tella playlist and figure out what playlist the video most likely belongs into.

And as soon as it's found it, it will automatically, without me actually having to manually clicking, I think, take the video and automatically add it to that playlist.

Now, all of this can be done very easily by first of all using a tool like zapier or make.com and then just simply having a read through the API documentation that Tella provides, and what you'll find is that you can get access to certain types of information.

For example, the ability to list all of the videos that are in your database.

You can update your video, you can even start, a video export.

You can add a video to a playlist.

And all you need to do is chain the parts of your workflows that you're otherwise have to do manually Intella to each other using an automation tool.

Now, being able to organize videos is of course one thing, but, one of the big ideas I've had for something like a Tella API is to actually automate the process of repurposing content.

Now, I created a lot of YouTube videos, and what I would typically do is once I've made a video, I would have to export it, upload it to YouTube, and then I would basically take it, grab the transcript, grab the chapters, throw it into ChatGPT, and turn it into a blog post.

Now, all of this would typically take me a solid hour, hour and a half.

Now, I can do all of this into end without actually having to copy and paste anything.

And this is a workflow I want to show you.

So what I have done is I've used make.com which is an automation tool similar to something like Zapier, that waits for me to add a video inside of Tella to a specific playlist.

It will then retrieve the information, write a blog post, and then it will automatically add it to my blog.

Now, to show you how this process works end to end, let me quickly pause the video and show you what happens.

So here's the video I'm working on right now.

As soon as I add a new video, what I actually do is I add it to a draft playlist so that I can basically notify an editor to jump in and edit things.

But as soon as it's done, what I can do is I can add it to a new playlist.

And so I've created a playlist called Connor's Blog.

And as soon as it's added to this playlist, what happens is it now sees in make.com that a video was added to my blog.

It then goes ahead and it retrieves all of the information from Tella.

So it will get things like the name of my video, the description, it will get chapters if they've been generated, my transcript, my thumbnails, all those types of things.

And then I feed all of that information in to ChatGPT.

Essentially it's an OpenAI endpoint.

And what that will do is it will hit and turn my video into a blog post that then automatically gets added to my blog in wipflow.

And then when I jump into webflow, you can see that it was added to my blog.

And I wanted to quickly show you what this looks like blog form because this here is something that so long and so a title, it's created a little bit of an intro, it's embedded my video and then it's gone ahead and taken my transcript and turned that into a full on blog post.

Which is something that is super exciting.

Now this here is literally something that doesn't require any clicks.

You just need to write a nice prompt, plug it into an automation tool like Zapier or Make or you can even use a coding platform if you're more comfortable with that.

And just like that, you've gone from video to blog in seconds.

Now, there are tons of additional use cases for this that I'll dive into in the future.

But, you could, for example, now create an end to end process for creating a video in Tella and then automatically uploading it to YouTube.

If you, use Tella primarily for sales videos, you could go ahead and grab the transcript of a sales video that you've made and then personalize it to the person that you're sending.

Ultimately, the key thing that I wanted to say is that a lot of the things that would otherwise have to do manually when working with Tella can now be automated with the API.

It's super exciting, and so I hope you found this video useful.

I'll be in the Tella Circle, forum, in case there are any questions, but I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you're working on.

Bye.
