Typeform Teardown (Edit)

All right guys, so today we're going to tear down Typeform, the form builder that seems to be around for ever.

So I'm going to go through their signup, their onboarding, and maybe build a form as well.

So I'm just going to give you my kind of raw, unfiltered thought on the experience.

All right, right, let's click sign up over here.

Okay, so this is a pretty good start.

really like this sign up page.

we got interactive carousel over here which just shares and previews some of the features.

so that works pretty well.

we've got some social proof down here.

looks like it's trusted by 150,000 brands, including some of these big names as well.

we've got multiple sign up options.

So if we've got a social account, I can use that and we can sign up super quick.

so in this instance, going to sign up with my email here.

Okay, so let's put my email in here.

We'll get this done as quickly as we can.

So this is a really nice inline validation form validation here.

So when I go to type password, you can see it's telling me this.

there are some password rules.

So we need to use at least eight or more characters here with a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols.

So let's see if we can type a password in here, Adheres, to those rules.

no.

Okay, I, yeah, I mean, I guess that's one of the drawbacks to having fairly strict rules here.

it's a pain in the ass to be able to create a password that you can remember.

as well as allow Typeform to tailor the experience based on my activity and also enriching my data with third parties for more relevant content.

Honestly not too sure how I feel about that.

I feel like they should have been a bit more transparent rather than hiding it in here.

Anyway, let's create a free account.

Okay, so looks like I now need to activate my account so I need to go to my email.

You know what would be super useful here?

Why don't they just give me a link to take me to my Gmail and then I can click the link in there and we can get through and we can get into the product much quicker.

Okay, so I've confirmed my account, and now it looks like we're going through some onboarding here and ironically using the type forms, the forms that you can obviously create with the product.

So we've got a three step process which is pretty clear, from the top here.

So let's see if we can whiz through this.

Okay, so clearly, these are three sections rather than three steps.

We've had quite a few questions so far.

We've signed up and we've gone through the onboarding and now rather than being taken straight into the product clearly, we've, we've been directed, to the Typeform AI which is now going to help us create a form from scratch.

or with a prompt if you want to say, like what I like about this is I'm not going to get lost in the product immediately.

It's very clear and it's very obvious, what I need to do now.

But if this is not something I wanted to do at this point then it's not that clear, how I get out of here.

I'm guessing I clicking forms at the top here and that'll take me back to the dashboard and then I can kind of browse and figure, figure things out myself.

Anyway, I'm going to give this a try.

So, You want to understand.

Okay, so create a form for SaaS founders who want to understand how UX design will help them.

Okay, so clearly Typeforms in beta right now.

Typeform AI.

it's understood the question and it's helped create A targeted form for SaaS founders who are interested in UX design.

And it's suggested here that we're going to collect basic contact details and then ask them about some of their main UX challenges, what the current product stage is and what their goals are, which makes sense to me.

yeah, I mean this, this looks pretty good.

It looks like I can probably continue to chat with it and then make some changes but the questions that they've put together look pretty good to me.

So we are asking who they are, what their email is, what they're building, what stage they're at with things, what's the biggest challenge and then what would you like to accomplish with improve UX for the product and then asking them if they have dedicated ux resource on their team right now.

So this works really well, really simple.

super easy to understand.

I like the fact that the questions themselves are colour coded as well.

So it's easy for me to understand that this is is a text question.

And then it looks like we've got multiple choice questions here and then we're obviously gathering their email address here as well.

And then it is super simple to click preview.

And as you can see.

Not sure it's done a great job of pulling through my branding.

I did used to use purple quite a lot but not anymore.

It has pulled through my name to be fair.

right, let's give this little preview a test then.

So that works really well.

And would like to see what it looks like on desktop.

And I'd like to know if they're doing any kind of colour contrast accessibility checks here because clearly you might struggle to read my name on this purple background.

it could be a lot worse.

so what I am going to do here, I'm just going to prompt and ask it to add another question and let's see what we get back here.

the thing I'd like is maybe some suggestions.

this is like really open ended right now.

So chatting with the Typeform AI kind of just feels like I could type anything in there.

So yeah, maybe just offering some suggestions.

I do like the fact that you can use your mic obviously.

So if you don't want to sit here and type with your keyboard then you could do that.

So let's add, let's add one more question, one more relevant.

Okay, so it's thinking, it's doing its thing, it's telling me something's going on, which is cool.

otherwise I might just think it's broken.

A really good one at that as well.

So how are we going to measure, the user experience?

How are we going to measure the success?

And it's given us user retention, feedback from customers, feature adoption, reduction in support tickets, we currently don't measure.

So you've got some really nice, choices in there as well.

and then it's followed up with another question as well.

So it's confirmed, it's, completed the request and then it's asking if I want to add anything else as well, which I think is cool.

Just keeps the conversation going.

As I said earlier, I think that probably just takes us back to the dashboard universal board.

okay, so I wasn't sure about what this is, but it probably allows me to create different types of forms.

So at the moment, we're in universal more, but we can also create a lead qualification, we can create a quiz or a match quiz as well.

Looks like we could probably switch our current form to any one of those on the left.

we also have the questions, which it looks like we can probably reorder.

so that works pretty well.

And then we've got the ability to duplicate or remove them if we need to.

I love the suggestion here where it's saying, why don't you add a welcome screen, introduce your brand, with an image or a video just to boost engagement.

But I really like the fact that it's offering some of these helpful suggestions as I'm going through building the form and then endings.

We've got nothing in here right now.

but we could add an ending screen or we could just kind of direct users to a URL here.

Again, really useful, adding content.

Wow.

Okay, lots of different, form elements we can use here.

Again, all colour coded.

having this like, model that allows me to just pick and choose what I want, is really nice.

It's a really good experience.

I'm not going to dive into this too much, but it looks like we can Import questions as well from maybe a Google form we've had previously or like we have done, you can create a form with AI.

let's maybe just see if we can tweak the design and have another little look at what else we've got here.

So design as we saw they pulled that through from my website.

it's worked okay.

So we've got some gallery templates here as well.

so some pre made suggestions.

Nice variety here.

Let's pick something that's a little bit more relevant.

Let's pick this Smart Ash one click it.

And we have the confirmation bottom left here.

And now we can see those in action.

So that looks good.

beyond that looks like we've probably got a mobile and desktop preview switch between them which is nice.

And then we've also got the play button which allows us to kind of go through full screen preview again.

Everything's really responsive.

this is pretty slick.

It's even got some more advanced design features built into this like the accessibility.

and it's picked up on the fact that the contrast between some of the text and the background might not be readable for everybody.

So the button text doesn't have enough contrast between the background here.

So that's really nice.

Especially if you're not a designer or you're not, you're not that way inclined.

these are easy, these are things you can easily miss.

so there's a lot of kind of value add here for users who maybe don't have experience in design.

next up we've got some version history which is always really useful.

we can go back and we can probably see what our form looked like yesterday, last week, etc.

Etc.

And then we've got various other language settings, form settings.

I'm not going to go into those in too much detail anyway, I'll probably wrap it up there.

yeah, really nice.

Obviously we had a few issues with the sign up but the onboarding was pretty slick.

Took me through that really quickly and I've been able to kind of build a form literally within seconds with the help of their AI.

And then making changes to the design or adding or removing.
