# Not enough storage to record

> What to do when Tella stops your recording because your device is running out of storage.

Tella records your video in your browser before uploading it to our servers. We need a few gigabytes of free space on your device to keep the recording safe while it uploads. If your device is nearly full, Tella will stop the recording before you lose any of it.

You'll see this error in two places:

* **Before you start recording** — Tella checks that you have at least 5 GB of free storage available to the browser. If you don't, we won't let you start.
* **During a recording** — if your device runs out of space mid-session, Tella stops the recording so the parts that already uploaded aren't lost.

## How to free up storage

The fastest way to fix this is to free up disk space on your computer, then refresh the page.

### On Mac

1. Open the Apple menu and choose **About This Mac**.
2. Click **Storage** to see what's taking up space.
3. Click **Manage…** and use the recommendations to delete files you don't need (Downloads, large attachments, old iOS backups, etc.).
4. Empty the Trash when you're done.

### On Windows

1. Open **Settings → System → Storage**.
2. Turn on **Storage Sense** to automatically clean up temporary files, or click **Cleanup recommendations** to free space manually.
3. Empty the Recycle Bin when you're done.

### Clear browser site data (optional)

If your computer's hard drive looks fine but Tella still says you're out of storage, your browser may be holding onto a lot of cached data. Clear it for `tella.tv`:

1. Open Chrome's settings: `chrome://settings/content/all`.
2. Search for `tella.tv` and click the trash icon next to it.
3. Reload Tella and try again.

<Note>
  Tella stores video chunks in your browser until they finish uploading. Before clearing site data, wait for uploads to finish and download a copy of important recent recordings. Clearing it permanently removes chunks that have not reached Tella's servers yet.
</Note>

## Still stuck?

If you have plenty of free disk space but Tella keeps showing this error, your browser may be reporting the wrong quota — restart your browser and try again. If that doesn't help, [message us](mailto:support@tella.com) and we'll take a look.
